The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
AllSaints emerged from London is Kings Road in 1994, built on a fashion philosophy that rejected convention and embraced urban edge. The brand is gender-fluid identity translated naturally into fragrance, and Incense City serves as the centerpiece of their 2018 unisex trio. Rather than constructing a fragrance that introduces itself politely, AllSaints chose to open at full volume, placing the wearer immediately into the heart of their olfactory statement.
The choice to build Incense City entirely from heart notes reveals a specific philosophy about incense as a material. Rather than using it as an accent within a conventional structure, AllSaints treats it as the substance itself. Cedarwood and Cypress support this incense-forward approach by adding dimension without distraction, their woodiness providing contrast to smoke rather than competing with it. Musk bridges the gap between fragrance and skin, making the composition feel less like perfume and more like an extension of the wearer is own presence.
The evolution
The narrative arc of Incense City defies traditional fragrance structure. Where most compositions move from bright opening through aromatic heart to lingering base, this scent eliminates those transitions entirely. Incense arrives without ceremony, joined immediately by Cedarwood is dry warmth and Cypress is faint mentholated edge. The combination creates a smoke-and-wood landscape that persists unchanged for hours. Musk does not emerge as a late-stage reveal but functions from the start as a binding element, keeping the atmospheric smoke grounded against the skin. The wearer experiences no transformation, only a sustained presence that slowly attenuates rather than evolves.
Cultural impact
Since its 2018 debut, Incense City has become a quiet staple among fans of minimalist, incense‑driven scents. Wearers note its ability to sit close yet command attention, making it a go‑to for city dwellers who favor understated drama. Compared with peers like Nudo and Black Calamus, it stands out for the singular cypress launch, earning a reputation as the scent of the modern urban explorer.
