The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Boisée arrived in 2025 from Al Majed Oud, a house that began trading raw oud wood long before it ever composed a finished fragrance. The name is the scent: boisée, wooded, the French word for what this composition actually does on skin. Philippine Courtière built it as part of the Classic collection, a contemporary creation that reorients the house's aesthetic around a different central material. Where agarwood resin has long defined the genre, Boisée places leather at the heart of the structure, and the result is something that feels both rooted in heritage and recalibrated for a different kind of wearer. The composition carries a sense of gravity, but it wears with a certain ease, a fragrance that feels considered and constructed rather than ceremonial.
What's interesting here is the restraint. The composition could have leaned into oud oil and resinous heaviness, and Courtière clearly chose a different path. Instead, the opening sets bergamot against incense at the top, building a smoky-fresh tension before the leather even arrives. The bergamot flashes bright and almost citrus-clean, while the incense rolls in underneath like smoke caught in fabric, woody and slightly sharp, and the two create a kind of controlled friction that pulls you forward.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are deceptive. Bergamot and violet lift the opening into something almost clean, the kind of brightness you'd expect from a lighter Eau de Toilette, bright and powdery all at once. Then the incense lands. Not the sweet church variety, more like the smoke that clings to fabric after a long evening, woody and slightly sharp, and it changes the entire temperature of the composition. By the 90-minute mark, leather takes over and stays. Rose softens it just enough to keep things from going dry, and cypress adds that pencil-shaving aromatics in the background, giving the whole middle phase a clean, almost resinous edge that keeps the leather honest.
Cultural impact
Boisée lands in 2025 as part of Al Majed Oud's Classic collection, a line that sits within a house with deep roots in agarwood and oud. The leathery-woody profile reads as its own statement, grounded in the leathery-woody register the brand has explored, with enough international character to feel at home in any rotation. The composition carries a certain crossover appeal, the kind of scent that works for someone interested in oud culture but drawn to a different kind of material story.
