The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Golden Hawk Oriental arrived in 2024 as part of Ajmal's broader exploration of Arabian perfumery through a modern, international lens. The name evokes the falconry heritage of the Gulf, where the hawk stands for precision, patience, and an almost aristocratic restraint. Ajmal channeled that image into something wearable: an oriental that opens cool rather than smoky, then pulls you inward toward caramel and leather. The opening offers a clean, aromatic brightness built on orange, mint, and cardamom, and the effect is almost cologne-adjacent in its lift. Within minutes, the spice warms up, the citrus rounds out, and the composition begins to settle into a richer register.
What makes the structure interesting is the tension between the top trio of cardamom, mint, and citrus, and the dense, sweet base of caramel, tonka, and leather. The composition refuses to commit to one direction for too long, shifting gears as the hours pass. The lavender and orange blossom in the heart act as a bridge, not a destination, softening the spice without drowning it. Sandalwood and amber at the base give the caramel something woody to lean against, so the sweetness never tips into cloying.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are a bright argument. Cardamom and nutmeg cut through orange and lemon, with mint cooling the edges so the citrus does not turn sweet too soon. It reads sharp, almost cologne-like, and you might wonder where the oriental part went. Around the thirty-minute mark the heart blooms. Orange blossom arrives first, dewy and soft, followed by lavender that softens the whole structure into something more textured. The shift from sharp to soft happens faster than you expect, and the whole composition tilts toward warmth almost as soon as you stop noticing the opening. By the two-hour mark the base has fully taken over. Caramel and tonka bean do most of the talking, warmed by sandalwood and anchored by leather that has a clean, slightly suede-like character.
Cultural impact
Golden Hawk Oriental sits in an interesting spot within the caramel-leather oriental family. The cardamom-mint opening gives it a brightness that many orientals skip, and that lift shapes the way the fragrance is received compared to heavier, resin-driven compositions in the same category. It offers warmth and complexity in a format that feels easy to approach, and the sweet-spice character is balanced enough to appeal to wearers who want richness without intensity.
