The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mandy Aftel lets natural materials speak for themselves, and Velvet Tuberose is an expression of that philosophy. The idea crystallized around one question: what happens when you let tuberose exist at full intensity? Aftel had been wanting to create a solid perfume for years, something worn close to the body, intimate by design. Tuberose became the perfect subject. Not a toned-down version. Not a sophisticated reinterpretation. The flower, luxurious and sumptuous, like velvet, speaks with a richness that captures its most essential character. The fragrance embraces the flower's bold nature without apology, finding its power in authenticity rather than restraint.
What sets this apart from other tuberose fragrances isn't the flower itself, it's the mitti attar running underneath. That traditional Indian earth accord, the scent of rain falling on sun-drenched soil, baked earth breathing out its aroma, gives the composition an earthy depth that most white floral fragrances lack entirely. The result is creamy and warm at the surface, but grounded and alive beneath. Grand fir and pink grapefruit in the top notes serve a specific purpose: they lift the tuberose, keep it from becoming overwhelming, let it breathe.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and tart. Pink grapefruit cuts through immediately, citrus-forward and awake, with grand fir threading sweet forest air alongside the transparent florals. It reads clean in the early stages. Then the tuberose takes over completely. This is where it earns the name. Narcotic, voluptuous, heady, the creaminess arrives like something tangible, warm and luscious. The white flowers in the heart amplify everything, building a lushness that fills the composition. What follows is a slow, gorgeous settling. The citrus lifts, the florals deepen, and the sandalwood-spun sugar base emerges quietly. The drydown becomes dominant as time passes, sandalwood warmth and spun sugar softness creating an intimate close that invites someone to lean in and discover.
Cultural impact
Aftelier occupies a distinct space in natural perfumery. Velvet Tuberose stands as a direct exploration of the flower: tuberose, unhidden, unhedged. The fragrance presents the bloom without compromise or dilution, celebrating its lush, opulent character in a way that honors the flower's most essential nature.
