The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2005, Philippe Bousseton created Adidas Originals. Cotton candy opens the composition with a burst of sugary sweetness that immediately announces the fragrance's character. This synthetic note brings a constructed, unapologetic sweetness that doesn't try to mimic anything natural. The fragrance moves into fruity territory, with bright citrus and tropical notes emerging as the opening settles. There's a quiet confidence to the blend, a smoothness that makes it approachable without being bland. The overall effect is sweet, fruity, and self-assured, a scent that stands apart from the typical athletic fragrances of its time.
Cotton candy occupies an interesting space in perfumery. It's synthetic, unapologetically so, a constructed sweetness that doesn't try to smell like anything natural. Bousseton paired it with coriander and nutmeg, two spices that ground the sweetness without dulling it. Coriander brings a citrusy, slightly peppery quality that lifts the composition, while nutmeg adds warmth and a hint of spice that creates depth. The heart brings mint and Curaçao, keeping the composition cool and bright.
The evolution
Cotton candy announces itself immediately. Not delicate, not subtle, a wall of sugary sweetness that sits bold for the first twenty minutes. Then mint arrives, bringing an immediate cooling sensation that cuts through the sweetness like a refreshing breeze. The citrus follows, bright and zesty, adding sparkle and lift to the composition. Everything lifts, opens, becomes more breathable. Licorice appears somewhere around the heart, adding a slightly bitter, anise-like counter to the sweetness without ever taking over the fragrance. The combination creates an intriguing tension between sweet and savory notes. By hour three, the vanilla and vetiver have settled into something warmer and woodier. The cotton candy is gone. What remains is soft, close, and present for another four or five hours on most skin types.
Cultural impact
The Adidas Originals fragrance made its debut in 2005. Leading with cotton candy as the dominant opening note was a choice that set it apart from many other men's fragrances of the time. Men's fragrances rarely ventured into overtly sweet territory, and this particular approach made the scent immediately recognizable. The fragrance blended athletic accessibility with a playful sweetness that felt both youthful and distinctive. The result was a scent that sparked conversation, people noticed it, reacted to it, and remembered it. The sweet, bold character created a distinctive olfactory signature that stood out in a crowded market.
