Why it exists.
The beginning
Unicorn landed in 2024 as the crown jewel of Aaron Terence Hughes' Oud Collection, a series that positions oud as the compositional center of gravity. The name draws from the rarity of the oud at its core, a material treated as singular enough to name a whole fragrance after. Every other note answers to it, building a structure where the oud leads and the surrounding accords serve as counterpoint. The composition reflects the kind of material-first thinking that defines ATH's approach to oud-forward work. Released alongside the rest of the collection, Unicorn reads as the most concentrated expression of that philosophy, a fragrance where the oud isn't buried under competing elements but allowed to dominate the architecture from opening to close.
The fragrance leans into a specific extraction method: CO2 extracts. Cinnamon CO2, clove CO2, patchouli CO2, and frankincense CO2 each contribute their own textural weight to the composition. The spice notes read with clarity, the patchuyu brings an earthy transparency, and the frankincense carries a resinous brightness that elevates the whole heart. Combined with tonka bean absolute and vanilla absolute, the base settles into a sweetness that's warm without tipping into gourmand territory.

The first ten minutes belong to bergamot, bright and almost brash before the spice wave crashes in. Then the CO2 extracts start talking. Cinnamon arrives with genuine heat, clove builds underneath, and the oud surfaces with its hay-and-leather profile, barnyard-adjacent but tempered by the surrounding sweetness. Patchouli grounds it, tonka and vanilla absolutes sweeten the edges, and white musk smooths the transition between phases. The spice notes never fully recede; they weave through the later stages like a persistent thread, keeping the warmth alive even as the oud and vanilla take over the dominant register.

Unicorn has drawn comparisons against heavy hitters in the oud-forward category, with wearers familiar with the ATH catalogue often referencing Oud for Greatness and Haltane as benchmarks. Where those fragrances lean darker or more animalic, Unicorn positions itself on the sweeter, more approachable end of the spectrum, closer to gourmand territory without crossing the line. The use of CO2 extracts across multiple spice and resin notes gives the composition a technical edge that sets it apart from conventional oud fragrances that rely on steam-distilled materials.
