The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Supernova takes its name from the most violent event in the observable universe, a star burning through its fuel, collapsing inward, then erupting in a flash bright enough to outshine entire galaxies. That explosive-to-grounded arc is the whole concept. Aaron Terence Hughes built this fragrance to mirror that trajectory: a launch so bright it demands attention, followed by a slow descent into something earthier, more animalic, more honest. The supernova doesn't last forever. But while it does, it rewrites the sky.
The structure is deliberate, four citrus materials in the opening (mandarin, orange, grapefruit, Italian bergamot) firing simultaneously to create maximum luminosity, then a heart of pineapple and marine notes that keeps the sweetness alive without ever returning to that initial burst. The base is where the star settles: ambergris, oakmoss, white musk, patchouli, and ginger creating an animalic-woody foundation that anchors the whole composition. It's a pyramid designed to tell a story, not just smell pleasant.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes are all citrus warfare. Mandarin and grapefruit hit first, sharp and pulpy, followed immediately by Italian bergamot's cooler, more bitter edge. The blend is sweet but not soft, there's a tartness that keeps it from becoming a fruit salad. At around the thirty-minute mark, the pineapple arrives, softer now, almost creamy against the fading citrus. The sea notes give it a marine lift, a hint of salt air that keeps the heart from feeling too heavy. By the second hour, the ambergris begins to assert itself, animalic, slightly fecal, but in a clean way. Oakmoss and patchouli follow, earthy and green, while white musk smooths everything into a skin-close drydown that lingers for hours. On fabric, this fragrance outlasts most. It doesn't disappear, it settles and stays.
Cultural impact
Supernova fills a specific gap in the ATH catalog: a fragrance with the projection and longevity of the house's stronger compositions, but with a brightness that reads as summer-appropriate rather than autumnal. Community reviews consistently praise its sillage, described as strong enough to fill a room without overwhelming it, and its ability to evolve over eight to ten hours on skin. The citrus-to-animalic arc has polarized some wearers who expected a consistently fresh scent, but those who understand what they're buying into call it one of the most versatile ATH releases.
