The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Macaque Fuji Apple Edition arrived in 2021 as Zoologist's second take on the macaque concept, following the Yuzu edition. The idea comes from an old observation: two communities sharing the same landscape, living entirely different lives. Macaques swing through trees, grasping fruit with abandon. Their human neighbours watch from temple walls, coveting that effortless playfulness. The macaques barely notice. Mackenzie Reilly composed this edition around a single tension: what happens when sweetness meets stillness? Fuji apple opens bright and accessible, but it's anchored by hinoki and frankincense, materials that pull the composition toward something more austere. The result isn't a fruity fragrance that happens to have depth. It's a contemplative one that happens to open with fruit.
The note structure here is unusual. Fuji apple sits at the top, but it's not doing the usual fruity work of sweetness or innocence. Instead, it's the macaque's perspective: bright, immediate, grasping. The heart of hinoki and myrrh shifts the narrative entirely. Hinoki is a Japanese cypress with a clean, almost antiseptic woodiness. Myrrh is resinous and slightly bitter. Together they create a meditative quality that dominates the heart. The base layers frankincense absolute twice, once in the heart accord and once in the base, with oakmoss and New Caledonian sandalwood. That double frankincense is the structural oddity. Most fragrances use it as a top or base note.
The evolution
The opening hits with Fuji apple's crisp sweetness, but juniper berries arrive immediately, adding a sharp, almost piney edge that keeps the fruit from being straightforward. The apple reads more like a green apple note than a ripe one, tart and bright. This phase lasts about 30 minutes before the heart takes over. Hinoki wood announces itself with a clean, almost clinical woodiness. Myrrh follows, resinous and slightly bitter, pulling the composition toward something contemplative. The incense isn't smoky here. It's warm, almost sweet, creating a quiet gravity that dominates the next several hours. The frankincense becomes more pronounced as the heart settles, working alongside the hinoki to create an austere forest quality. Oakmoss emerges in the drydown, adding an earthy, slightly mossy character that grounds the sandalwood. The New Caledonian sandalwood reads as creamy and warm, a softening agent that prevents the whole thing from becoming too austere.
Cultural impact
Macaque Fuji Apple Edition sits at the more contemplative end of Zoologist's range. It's not a crowd-pleaser in the traditional sense. The apple opening is bright and accessible, but the hinoki-incense heart shifts the composition into meditative territory. Community ratings are solid across the board, with particular praise for the balance between fruit and wood. The frankincense-heavy drydown keeps wearers coming back. This is a fragrance for someone who wants something that starts sweet and ends still.
