The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tome 1 La Pureté for Him arrived in 2012 as Zadig & Voltaire's gender-split expansion of the original unisex fragrance. The house had built its identity on effortless rock-and-roll sophistication, the idea that you could quote philosophy in worn-in leather and belong nowhere more than everywhere. Perfumer Nathalie Lorson carried that ethos into the composition, pulling the original's concept of 'fallen angels' toward something grounded, everyday, and distinctly masculine in its warmth. The 'for Him' designation wasn't a pivot to power-fresh or aquatic. It was an invitation: come closer.
What makes this work is the tension between brightness and warmth that never fully resolves. The bergamot and orange blossom open clean, almost soapy, the kind of clarity you'd expect from a much lighter scent. Then the almond arrives and shifts the register entirely. Suddenly it's softer, warmer, a little powdery. That contrast is where the interest lives. The patchouli in the heart doesn't bring darkness, it brings weight, anchoring the sweetness so it doesn't float away. Tonka bean adds a faint vanilla-adjacent warmth that keeps everything in the same register from top to bottom. It's a composed fragrance, but composed around an unexpected duality.
The evolution
Bergamot and orange blossom open the composition with a bright, clean lift. The citrus quickly gives way to a soft almond nuance that tempers the sharpness and adds a gentle warmth. The transition is smooth, moving the wearer from crisp morning air into a smoother, skin‑close atmosphere. Patchouli then emerges, delivering a woody‑earthy weight that remains balanced and never heavy. Beneath this, tonka bean adds a faint sweetness that whispers in the background. As the hours pass, sandalwood and white musk appear, wrapping the base in a creamy, powdery softness that stays close to the skin. The overall evolution feels fluid, with each layer blending naturally into the next, leaving a subtle warmth that lingers quietly.
Cultural impact
Zadig & Voltaire approaches fragrance with the same easy confidence that defines its clothing. The brand aims at those who feel mainstream masculine scents are too loud or too predictable, offering a woody‑floral composition that stays close to the skin. Tome 1 La Pureté for Him opens with bright citrus, then warms into a delicate almond‑softened heart, while the base builds a lasting, earthy‑woody presence that never overwhelms. The scent lingers with a subtle, sweet‑tonka glow, punctuated by sandalwood and white musk that keep it intimate and refined.
