The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black Sukar entered the XJ Oud collection as its most accessible chapter. Perfumer Chris Maurice built this around Laotian oud, but not the kind that overwhelms. Instead, it's the warm foundation beneath freesia, peony, and damask rose, with just enough citrus and pink pepper to keep things lively. The oud provides a resinous, slightly animalic depth that grounds the brighter notes without dominating them. Vanilla and white musk finish close to skin, making this an oud for people who think they don't like oud. The composition balances sweetness against earthiness, creating something approachable yet still distinctly oud-forward.
What makes Black Sukar unusual is its refusal to choose. The oud doesn't dominate, it supports. The florals don't compete, they lead. White musk and vanilla keep everything soft and intimate, while pink pepper adds just enough warmth to prevent the whole thing from disappearing into pure sweetness. It's an oud oil that smells like a perfume, not the other way around.
The evolution
First contact brings freesia and orange, bright and clean. The pink pepper arrives quickly, adding warmth without heat. The florals take their time arriving, but when they do, peony and damask rose claim the space with soft, romantic presence. The oud builds quietly underneath, not demanding attention but adding resinous weight to the composition. As the hours pass, the florals soften into something powdery and warm, while the oud and white musk form a close-to-skin base. The vanilla sweetens the drydown without overwhelming, creating an intimate, warm finish. Traces of the fragrance linger for hours, staying close to the skin in a way that feels personal rather than projecting.
Cultural impact
Black Sukar has become the entry point for the XJ Oud collection, introducing the concept of soft oud to those new to the ingredient. It's the fragrance that opens doors for people curious about oud but hesitant to approach its more intense expressions. The balance of florals against the oud base has made it accessible to wearers who appreciate feminine floral notes but want something with more depth and character than traditional florals. This approachable character has earned it a following among those exploring the oud category for the first time.
