The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
WIDIAN's original Limited 71 arrived in 2016 as a bridge between Arabian raw materials and French perfumery technique. Two years later, the house decided the concept could go further. The 2018 release, Limited 71 Extreme, was composed as a fougère-amber perfume that took the original's architecture and carried it forward with greater density and more resinous character. Perfumer Jordi Fernández built the formula around a core of oud, patchouli, and vetiver, with bay leaf and cashmeran adding herbal warmth and a soft, woody haze. The result feels like an extension of the original's logic rather than a reinvention, a composition that respects what came before while letting the heavier materials speak with more authority.
What makes this composition worth slowing down for is the conversation between the aromatics and the woods. Akigalawood brings a cocoa-like, slightly spicy facet that gives the oud company without competing with it. Bay leaf adds an herbal layer that lifts the aromatic notes, while cashmeran contributes its signature warmth and softness. According to Ali Aljaberi, the sweetness of dates and the smoky veil of incense were chosen to give a special nuance to the base, threading a quiet sweetness through what could otherwise read as a purely resinous structure.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to the top. Bergamot gives a quick, clean brightness, then sage and lavender settle in with a cool, herbal clarity. It reads almost fougère at this point, crisp and aromatic, like the opening of a cologne that's been quietly remixed. By the thirty-minute mark the lavender is still humming, but the bay leaf has sharpened, and there's a warmth building underneath from the cashmeran and amber. The akigalawood starts to show its hand, adding that dusty, cocoa-edged spice. This is where the fragrance stops being one thing and becomes another. The oud arrives in the heart of the wear, settling in with a richness that grows gradually, resinous and substantial, with a depth that the patchouli anchors. The vetiver keeps the whole base from going too dark, adding a dry, earthy lift that prevents the composition from collapsing into pure incense.
Cultural impact
Limited 71 Extreme occupies a distinctive place among contemporary Arabian-inspired oud compositions. It blends the smoky, resinous territory associated with Arabian perfumery with the aromatic, fougère-coded opening more familiar to Western fragrance audiences, creating a hybrid profile that bridges two traditions. On Parfumo, the fragrance appears alongside creations like WIDIAN's own Liwa, Initio's Oud for Greatness, and Parfums de Marly's Haltane, all sharing a smoky-oud-amber sensibility with a contemporary structure.
