The beginning
Some fragrances aim for subtlety. Oud Davana isn't one of them. Released in 2023 by whind, this composition was built around a single idea: Arabian seduction translated through modern perfumery. The brand's official line calls it "the intoxicating embrace of 1001 Arabian nights," and the composition commits to that promise without hedging. Jérôme Epinette, the perfumer, brings a hand here that feels deliberate and assured. He chose to lead with materials that carry weight, saffron, oud, coffee, and labdanum, then wove them into something that feels less like a fragrance and more like an atmosphere. The saffron ignites the opening with a leathery, almost metallic heat that prickles at the edges of perception.
The move that makes Oud Davana interesting is the pairing of davana with coffee, a combination that sounds odd on paper but reads as obvious on skin. Davana brings a fruity, almost boozy sweetness that picks up where the saffron leaves off, a syrupy liqueur quality that adds depth without becoming cloying. Coffee grounds that into something darker, adding a roasted bitterness that bridges the bright spices and the resinous base. Meanwhile, pistachio in the opening adds a creamy, nutty counterweight to the sharp black pepper, its marzipan-like softness keeping the spice from burning too hot.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are loud and bright, dominated by saffron and black pepper in a way that feels almost confrontational.
