The beginning
Flowerbomb Limited Edition 2020 is a collector's rendition of Viktor&Rolf's flagship, released in 2020 in partnership with L'Oréal. The original Flowerbomb arrived as an exercise in sheer floral volume, and this 2020 version carries the same conceptual ambition forward into a dressed-up collector's bottle. Four perfumers, Olivier Polge, Carlos Benaïm, Domitille Michalon Bertier, and Dominique Ropion, built the composition together, each adding their own layer to the dense bouquet the composition demands. The partnership with L'Oréal gave Viktor&Rolf access to some of the most technically gifted noses working in modern perfumery, and the lineup reads like a roll call of contemporary floral construction.
The structure is deliberate overload: bergamot, tea, and osmanthus on top to cut through the sweetness; jasmine, orange blossom, freesia, rose, and orchid at the heart for sheer floral mass; patchouli and musk underneath to anchor all that lightness in something darker and more grounded. Osmanthus is the wildcard here, its fruity warmth giving the white florals a slightly funky counterpoint that keeps the composition from collapsing into a single note. The opening trio does the work of seasoning what would otherwise be an almost unbearably sweet heart.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes smell like crushed petals in a glass jar, bright with bergamot and that surprising osmanthus sweetness, almost like dried apricot dipped in cold tea. Then the jasmine and orange blossom arrive as a wall, not a whisper, coating everything in indolic cream. The freesia keeps it from going heavy, and rose slips in underneath for warmth. By hour three the white florals have softened and the patchouli steps forward, earthy and a little dirty, which is what gives Flowerbomb its backbone. The musk arrives last and stays. On fabric the next morning it's a warm, sweet, slightly powdery skin scent, the osmanthus still detectable if you press your nose in. The opening is a confident burst of citrus and tea, with osmanthus threading its fruit-leather character through the top notes in a way that sets up the floral avalanche to come.
