The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Van Cleef & Arpels, established on Place Vendome in 1906, translates its jeweler artistry into fragrance. The Maison's first boutique opened at 22 Place Vendome in 1906, a location that holds deep significance in the brand's heritage. In 2020 the historic block was reimagined by the agency Jouin Manku, a modern transformation that inspired the creation of an olfactory homage to this legendary address. Perfumer Quentin Bisch was tasked with translating that reinvention into scent.
The choice of iris as the heart note reflects careful consideration. Iris offers something rare: powdery refinement that reads as both modern and timeless. By pairing it with the opening freshness of pear and bergamot, then anchoring it with the warm earthiness of patchouli and vetiver, 22 Vendome achieves a particular balance between delicacy and durability. The tonka bean serves as a bridge, softening the iris transition into the deeper base notes. This architecture allows each phase to feel intentional rather than accidental.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a double dose of sparkling freshness, bergamot and pear creating an immediate sense of arrival. The pear note brings a clean, slightly sweet fruitiness while bergamot adds its characteristic sharp citrus lift. As the composition breathes, iris takes control of the narrative, its powdery violet character dominating the heart with sophisticated force. The drydown reveals the true intent of 22 Vendome: tonka bean brings warm creaminess, patchouli provides earthy depth and slight bitterness, and vetiver offers dry, smoky grounding that persists for hours. The journey moves from bright sparkle to elegant powder to warm earth, a progression that mirrors the transformation of the historic address from heritage boutique to architectural landmark.
Cultural impact
22 Vendôme, launched by Van Cleef & Arpels, quickly became a symbol of refined French elegance, echoing the maison's heritage in high jewelry. Its pear and bergamot opening resonated with a generation seeking fresh yet timeless aromas, influencing boutique perfumers to explore fruit‑forward compositions with a sophisticated edge. The fragrance has been featured in cultural events celebrating Parisian artistry, and its subtle nod to classic couture has inspired designers to incorporate scent into runway presentations, reinforcing the dialogue between fragrance and fashion in contemporary culture.
