The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Absolute Bomb arrived in 2022 as part of Ulric de Varens' ongoing output of masculine fragrance. The name telegraphs intent. This is a scent built on confidence, on the straightforward pleasure of smelling like you've got somewhere to be. Ulric de Varens has never been about collecting or curating. It's about wearing, and Absolute Bomb is built to be worn hard. Woody aromatic is the official family, and the composition wears that classification honestly from the first spray onward. There's a clarity to the structure, a sense that the perfumer wanted every note to read at full volume without muddying its neighbours.
What makes the composition worth a second look is how the spicy and herbal layers are stacked. Sichuan pepper brings a citrus-tinged buzz that most fragrances try to fake with generic pepper notes. Paired with Provençal lavender and sage, it creates a heart that reads both herbal and modern, green enough to feel alive but tempered by a warmth that keeps it grounded. The base of sandalwood, moss, and mineral amber adds a stony quality, like sun-warmed concrete after a long afternoon.
The evolution
The opening is all bite. Bergamot and grapefruit crack open bright, almost tart, then the Sichuan pepper warms underneath like a match struck in a cold room. There's a resinous flicker from the elemi that keeps things from going purely sharp, lending a waxy lift that smooths the citrus before it tips into anything too acidic. The transition into the heart happens fast, when lavender and sage take over. This is the herbal stretch, green and slightly camphorous, grounded by patchouli that reads more dusty than dirty. Geranium slips in with a faint floral cool, and the whole arrangement smells less like a forest floor and more like something human and warm, a shared space rather than a wild one. The mineral amber starts to surface as the composition settles, bringing a stony counterpoint to the green herbs.
Cultural impact
Absolute Bomb reflects a particular approach to masculine fragrance that values directness over complexity. The woody aromatic classification places it in a familiar territory, one that prioritises clean structure and recognisable note combinations over experimental layering. This composition reflects that posture. The spicy opening, herbal heart, and woody mineral base create a scent that reads clearly from start to finish. It wears like a composition for someone who wants a fragrance that does its job without demanding attention or interpretation.
