The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Tumi entered fragrance in 2020 with a dual-concept approach. Awaken and Unwind, two scents mapped to the hours that define travel. Not morning routine, not evening ritual. Catherine Selig, working with Takasago, built Awaken around the specific energy of getting going. The top notes draw on grapefruit and bergamot, paired with coriander to introduce a crisp, slightly piquant quality. The heart and base layers feature cypress, fir, and frankincense, creating a structure that moves from bright citrus into deeper, more resinous territory. The combination gives the fragrance a distinctive trajectory, starting with immediate freshness before settling into more grounded, contemplative territory.
Fir brings a cool, coniferous quality that suggests clarity and openness. Frankincense contributes warmth, smoke, and a sense of depth that provides a counterpoint to the brighter elements. These two materials create an interesting tension within the fragrance. Clary sage offers herbal and slightly sweet notes that bridge the gap between the crispness of fir and the richness of frankincense. The result is a fragrance that moves through citrus and aromatic herbs into conifer and smoke without feeling fragmented.
The evolution
The opening combines grapefruit and bergamot, creating a bright citrus foundation. Coriander follows, introducing a green, slightly savory note that adds complexity to the citrus. The fir needle emerges early, bringing a cool, medicinal quality to the composition. As the fragrance develops, this coolness remains present, contributing to a distinctive character that some find unexpected. The clary sage becomes increasingly apparent, with its herbal, dry qualities providing a counterbalance to the initial sharpness. Cypress and frankincense arrive as the scent evolves, adding structural elements without dominating. The drydown features cedarwood and patchouli, which provide a woody, grounded base. Frankincense lingers in the base, contributing warmth and depth. The overall trajectory moves from bright citrus through aromatic complexity toward a settled, composed foundation.
Cultural impact
Awaken presents itself as an aromatic-woody fragrance with fresh spice, offering something with actual character. The combination of fir and frankincense creates an unusual density that sets it apart from more straightforward citrus fragrances. The scent avoids being performative, instead offering a confident presence that feels grounded in its materials. The tension between the cool coniferous notes and the warm resinous elements gives the fragrance a distinctive quality. It's the kind of scent that invites conversation not because it's loud, but because it has a clear point of view.
