The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jux2position is named for what holds it together. Not despite the tension, because of it. James Barry built TSVGA on the idea that a fragrance should tell a specific story, not describe a generic mood, and Jux2position is his most literal interpretation of that principle. Two materials. Opposing energies. The composition places two elements in a formula and lets them speak to each other without resolution. The idea isn't to smooth over the disagreement, but to lean into it, letting each element push against the other until the wearer becomes the one deciding how it ends. This is fragrance as argument, and Barry made it in 2021, the same year TSVGA released its first catalogue of experimental compositions from a home studio in Easthampton, Massachusetts.
What makes Jux2position unusual isn't that it juxtaposes, most interesting fragrances do that, but that it refuses to resolve. The smoke doesn't soften the sweetness. The sweetness doesn't tame the smoke. They coexist in a kind of permanent tension, which is exactly what the name promises. The cola-like top note that reviewers consistently mention is the bridge: it gives the smoke something to warm against and gives the sweetness something to lean into. Without it, the fragrance might read as two separate ideas. With it, the two ideas become one argument worth having.
The evolution
Jux2position doesn't announce itself so much as it sidles up. The opening is gentle, something sweet went slightly medicinal, almost like a memory of candy that can't quite be named. Smoke arrives quietly, threading through the composition without overwhelming it. For the first twenty minutes, you might question whether anything is happening at all. Then the incense thickens. The cola note deepens into something more resinous, more caramelized. The buttery quality emerges, rounding the smoke into something that no longer reads as burning but as warm, the warmth of resinous wood in a closed room. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. Two notes persist without resolving: they hold their ground, settling close to the body rather than projecting outward. The next morning, something faintly sweet and woodsmoke persists on fabric, not quite perfume, not quite memory.
Cultural impact
Jux2position sits in an interesting position among indie fragrances: it was popular enough to generate consistent community discussion and technical enough in its construction to earn respect from fragrance enthusiasts who parse accords carefully. The fragrance has a small but vocal following among collectors who appreciate TSVGA's approach to scent-making. Now discontinued, Jux2position has become a sought-after piece among TSVGA's early catalogue.
