The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Milestones opens with a rich, resinous character that feels both ancient and immediate. The fragrance unfolds across the skin like a slow exhale, each layer revealing itself in conversation with the next. Fossilised amber provides a golden, warm foundation that feels excavated rather than synthetic. Cep mushrooms, foraged from old forests, lend an earthy, mineral quality that grounds the composition without heaviness. The oud used here has been aged past its raw, aggressive phase, transformed into something contemplative and deliberate. This aged quality gives the wood note a settled, almost meditative presence rather than the sharp, piercing intensity often associated with oud.
The material palette of Milestones reads like a collection of recovered things: fossilised amber, aged oud, cep mushrooms. These are not fresh-cut ingredients. They carry time in them. Beeswax opens the composition, but this is not the sweet, candle-shop variety. It carries salt, animal warmth, the memory of heat. Costus root adds a bitter, hay-like quality that few perfumers use and fewer wearers expect. The combination sets a tone that is warm without being soft, animalic without being aggressive. What follows is a slow reveal: pine tar smoke, cacao depth, and white florals that arrive late but arrive sure.
The evolution
The opening arrives immediately with presence. Beeswax and costus create an animalic first impression that demands attention, the kind that either captivates or gives pause. The oud does not wait politely for its moment. It arrives simultaneously with everything else, grounding the composition from the very beginning and providing a counterpoint to the animalic warmth above. Soon after, pine tar begins to emerge, bringing smoky, slightly medicinal tones that evoke creosote retreating from warm stone. This phase defines much of the wear: close to the skin, dense, almost defiant in its persistence. Then the white florals make their entrance. Jasmine sambac and pink lotus arrive with quiet confidence, adding sweetness without overwhelming the conversation. They do not soften what came before. They complicate it, adding layers of nuance that reward continued attention.
Cultural impact
Since its debut, Milestones has carved out a distinct position within niche perfumery circles. The fragrance challenges conventional expectations around resinous and animalic materials, presenting them in a way that feels both grounded and ethereal. Costus root takes center stage here, a material that rarely commands such attention in Western fragrance creation, bringing its unique, slightly indolic character to the composition without overwhelming the blend. This bold material choice signals a willingness to prioritize artistic expression over broad commercial appeal.
