The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Trudon built its reputation on candles that capture moments in French history, and Ernesto stands as one of the house's most beloved creations. Translating that spirit to skin required a perfumer willing to embrace both warmth and edge. Emilie Bouge took on the challenge in 2026, tasked with preserving the candle's boozy soul while crafting something that could live and evolve on skin rather than burn in a flame. She reached for rum as the anchor, borrowing its warmth and sweetness, then built outward with materials that would give the fragrance staying power and complexity.
The note pyramid reflects a deliberate intention: start with something familiar and inviting, move through complexity, and arrive at a quiet, lasting impression. Rum and citrus create accessibility, clove and leather provide character, and the base of ambroxan, labdanum, moss, and patchouli ensures the fragrance wears close to the skin long after application. This structure mirrors Trudon's candle-making philosophy, where layers of wax and scent build toward a final, lingering warmth.
The evolution
The journey from spray to drydown follows a clear emotional arc. Rum opens the experience, brightened by bergamot and grapefruit, establishing a mood that is celebratory yet restrained. Clove arrives next, pushing the fragrance into spiced territory, while oak and tobacco add weight and texture. Leather becomes the heart's defining note, a worn-saddle warmth that suggests tradition and craft. As the hours pass, ambroxan and labdanum take over, replacing the spice with a clean, resinous glow. Patchouli and moss complete the picture, adding the earthiness that keeps the fragrance grounded in something real and persistent.
Cultural impact
Carmen quickly became a favorite among those who appreciate a candle‑inspired perfume that feels both luxurious and approachable. Wearers note its ability to transition from daytime confidence to evening intrigue, often mentioning its subtle nod to Trudon's historic candle heritage while standing out in a market saturated with linear scents.
