The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Too Faced built its name on boldness, makeup that didn't apologize for being fun, pretty, and a little bit much. The Better Than Sex mascara launched in 2009 and became a cult classic almost overnight. A fragrance followed in 2021, designed to carry that same energy into a new medium. Perfumer Frank Voelkl was tasked with translating the mascara's signature attitude into scent: something sexy, modern, and rebellious. The bottle itself echoes the mascara's iconic silhouette, matte-black glass, gold-tone cap, with a pink diamond accent inspired by founder Jerrod Blandino's wedding ring. It was meant to feel like something you'd keep on your vanity, not hide in a drawer.
The interesting move here is the contrast. The opening, passion fruit, lychee, peach, reads as pure tropical sweetness. Bright, almost effervescent. But the heart introduces florals that aren't delicate: magnolia has weight, jasmine has presence, and rose brings a quiet intensity. The real architecture sits in the base. Patchouli is the tell. It's earthy, slightly smoky, and gives the drydown a grounded quality that prevents the whole thing from floating away into pure fruit. Cedar and sandalwood extend that warmth. Musk brings it close to the skin. The result is a fragrance that starts flirtatious and ends with something to say.
The evolution
The opening hits within seconds, passion fruit and lychee create an immediate burst of tropical sweetness, softened slightly by peach. It's bright, almost effervescent. That citrus lifts everything, keeping it from cloying. Within the first fifteen minutes, the florals begin to emerge. Magnolia arrives first, giving the sweetness some architectural weight. Then rose and jasmine join, adding texture without diluting the fruity character. The heart phase reads as creamy and warm, but never heavy. The real shift happens around the forty-minute mark. The patchouli announces itself, earthy, slightly smoky, undeniably present. This is the fragrance's turning point. The tropical brightness doesn't disappear, but it recedes, making room for the woody base to take over. Cedar and sandalwood form a warm foundation. Musk keeps everything close to the skin. The drydown lasts for hours, settling into a quiet, confident warmth that stays present long after the initial spray.
Cultural impact
The Better Than Sex fragrance occupies an interesting space: it's bold enough to carry the brand's name, but structured enough to compete in a mature perfume market. The patchouli-forward drydown sets it apart from typical fruity-floral fragrances, giving it an edge that appeals to wearers looking for something with personality rather than politeness.
