The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maritime arrived in 2016, created by perfumer Frank Voelkl at Firmenich. Voelkl built the fragrance around a structure where the top notes hit fast and sharp, like the first surge of water, then slowly build into something fuller as the heart emerges and finally crashes into a warm woody drydown. The composition opens with crisp, bright citrus that immediately captures attention, followed by an aromatic burst of pink pepper that adds a subtle spice without overpowering. As the opening settles, clary sage and lavender emerge to ground the experience with their green, slightly herbal character. The heart develops around water lily and geranium, softened by the nuanced contribution of ambergris, creating a floral aquatic core that feels sophisticated rather than generic.
What makes Maritime work is the tension between mineral and herbal. The bergamot and pink pepper give it a sparkling, almost salty quality, sea spray, not ocean literal. The clary sage and lavender add an herbal depth that keeps the aquatic notes from feeling generic. Then the water lily and geranium arrive in the heart, and that's where the composition gets interesting: delicate florals shouldn't work against a mineral base, but here they do, because the violet leaf and ambergris hold everything together.
The evolution
The opening of Maritime announces itself boldly, with bergamot and pink pepper leading the charge in a sharp, sparkling introduction. Clary sage and lavender layer in as the scent develops, bringing green, slightly herbal nuances that deepen the aromatic profile. As the citrus recedes, the heart takes center stage with water lily and geranium, softened by the subtle brine of ambergris. The aquatic notes never fully disappear, but they become more integrated into the composition rather than remaining literal. The drydown is where Maritime truly earns its reputation. Cedar and sandalwood ground the fragrance, providing a warm, woody foundation that anchors everything that came before. Moss adds a quiet earthiness that gives the base dimension and prevents it from feeling purely synthetic.
Cultural impact
Maritime occupies a distinct niche within the aquatic fragrance category, positioning itself as an aromatic aquatic rather than a pure marine scent. The inclusion of clary sage and lavender gives it a botanical complexity that distinguishes it from more straightforward aquatic offerings. These aromatic herbs add an herbal, slightly medicinal quality that prevents the fragrance from reading as generic or overly synthetic. The combination of marine freshness with green, aromatic notes creates something that feels both modern and grounded.
