The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Calice Becker composed Jasmine Musk in 2009 as part of Tom Ford's White Musk Collection, a deliberate focus on musk as both concept and material. Four fragrances, four variations on the same idea: Urban Musk, White Suede, Musk Pure, and this one. The jasmine in this composition is bright and clean, grounded by orris and vanilla to keep it from floating away entirely. It was designed to be intimate, warm, and close. The opening immediately showcases the jasmine, which is creamy and lush with an almost intoxicating sweetness. Ylang-ylang threads through, adding a tropical depth that prevents the floral notes from feeling too delicate.
The composition moves from bright florals into something warmer and more personal. Jasmine and ylang-ylang at the top provide brightness and a hint of tropical depth, but the real story is what happens next: the orris and patchouli add a powdery, slightly earthy quality that keeps the florals from being too sweet. Then the base settles into sandalwood, vanilla, and amber, creating that warm, close-to-skin feeling that quality musks are known for. It's the kind of fragrance that doesn't announce itself but somehow stays with you long after you've left a room.
The evolution
The opening hits jasmine immediately, creamy, almost heady, with ylang-ylang adding a tropical undertone. Within minutes, the musk arrives. Not aggressive, not synthetic-seeming, just warm and present, wrapping around the florals like a second skin. The orris and vanilla kick in next, adding that powdery quality that makes this feel feminine without being girlish. By hour two, the composition has settled into something quieter, sandalwood and amber holding the drydown, the musk becoming skin-close and intimate. The top notes introduce the jasmine with a rich, almost narcotic sweetness that immediately captures attention. The ylang-ylang adds an exotic, tropical dimension that prevents the opening from feeling too conventional. As the fragrance transitions, the musk makes its presence known, not as a loud declaration but as a subtle, comforting warmth that wraps around the floral heart.
Cultural impact
The White Musk Collection, launched in 2009, represented a focused exploration of musk as both concept and material. Four variations on the same idea: Urban Musk, White Suede, Musk Pure, and Jasmine Musk. Each fragrance approached the theme from a different angle, using different supporting notes to create distinct characters while maintaining a common thread. Jasmine Musk occupies a specific place within this collection. The jasmine note provides brightness and floral elegance, while the musk base creates warmth and intimacy. The composition is designed to be close rather than projecting, rewarding proximity over distance.
