The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Old School Charm is The Dua Brand's 2022 riff on Bogue's Maai, a niche composition that itself drew from the golden age of perfumery, the era when aldehydes and animalic notes ran unchecked and florals were anything but demure. The Dua Brand makes carefully reconstructed versions of fragrances that would otherwise live behind a velvet rope, and Old School Charm fits squarely in that tradition. It takes a composition most people could never access and delivers it without the gatekeeping, a direct line to the architecture of something you have read about. The extrait de parfum concentration gives it weight and presence on the wrist, while the formula stays vegan and cruelty-free.
What makes this composition distinctive is the civet, a note most modern perfumery has quietly abandoned in favor of synthetic musks. Civet brings an animalic, almost bodily warmth that no molecule can quite replicate. Paired with aldehydes, which give the opening its bright, soapy fizz, and a white floral heart of tuberose, jasmine, and rose, the result is a study in tension. The aldehydes are crisp. The florals are lush. The civet is alive in a way that forces you to lean in. Resins anchor the base, pulling everything back into something wearable, but the fragrance never fully tames itself. It performs a kind of chemistry: bright and heavy, clean and dirty, classic and slightly dangerous, all at once.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost electric. Aldehydes crackle across the top, bright and soapy with a fizzy edge that makes the air around your wrist feel newly charged, a static hum that announces the composition before any single floral note makes itself known. Beneath that crackle, the white florals are already gathering: tuberose first, dense and almost waxy, then jasmine threading through with its green sharpness, then rose softening the edges and tying the bouquet together with a velvety warmth. Around the thirty-minute mark the aldehydes retreat and the composition settles into its full body. This is where the civet makes its entrance, animalic and warm, turning the floral bouquet from beautiful into inhabited, the way a room changes once someone has been living in it.
Cultural impact
Old School Charm occupies a particular territory in fragrance culture: the space where vintage-style aldehydic florals meet modern indie perfumery. Compositions built around civet and dense white florals carry an old-world gravity, a reminder of an era when perfumers worked with materials that were unruly, potent, and decidedly not polite. The current appetite for animalic profiles has grown alongside renewed interest in vintage formulations, with wearers drawn to scents that feel inhabited rather than merely decorative.
