The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Le Puy En Velay 6 launched in 2020 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a direct homage to Roja Parfums' Pierre de Velay No. 6. The house studies the architecture of high-end compositions and reconstructs them in their workshop, and this release was a deliberate exercise in translating a layered, animalic oriental into something more accessible without gutting its character. The result is an Extrait de Parfum concentration that keeps the smoky, resinous backbone intact. The composition leans heavily on frankincense, benzoin, labdanum, and styrax, a resin quartet that anchors the heart and base, while rose de Mai and jasmine push the florals toward something honeyed and almost ecclesiastical.
What makes this composition interesting isn't any single note. It's the friction between the ingredients. Rose de Mai and jasmine sit in the heart the way you'd expect from a high-end oriental, but they're flanked by frankincense, benzoin, labdanum, and styrax, a resin quartet that turns the florals honeyed and almost ecclesiastical rather than pretty. Then the base pulls in castoreum, leather, and a cluster of spices, cardamom, nutmeg, bay leaf, clove, davana, that push the whole thing toward animalic territory rather than sweet.
The evolution
The opening is bright and almost deceptive. Lemon and bergamot cut through the top, sharp enough to feel like a cologne, while clary sage and bay leaf add an herbal edge underneath. You might think you've grabbed the wrong bottle. Then the resins arrive. Frankincense, labdanum, benzoin, and styrax start to thicken the air, the citrus recedes, and the floral heart, rose de Mai, jasmine, ylang-ylang, finally has something to lean against. The florals don't smell like a bouquet. They smell like roses crushed between the pages of a leather book. As the composition settles, it moves into its animalic register. Castoreum, leather, vetiver, and cedar take turns at the surface, with the resins still glowing underneath. Davana adds a wine-like sweetness that keeps the base from going dry. Eventually it pulls close to skin, warm and lived-in, mostly leather, musk, and the last traces of labdanum.
Cultural impact
Le Puy En Velay 6 sits in the same conversation as the original Roja Parfums Pierre de Velay No. 6 it was built to reference. The original has earned a reputation for being dense, resinous, and unapologetically animalic, and this version carries that same DNA forward. The composition rewards attention rather than demanding a special occasion to justify itself. It's a scent that belongs to the broader trend of oriental reconstructions becoming more accessible, and it does so without sanding down the edges that make the reference worth referencing in the first place.
