The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Dua Brand launched His Jumping Shit! as part of their Inspired Expression line, a series built around reconstructing well-known fragrances with a twist. This one targets Joop! Homme, the 1989 aromatic fougère with a reputation that has outlasted most of its contemporaries. Grapefruit, rosemary, caraway, heliotrope, coriander, tonka bean, musk, and vetiver make up the skeleton, matching the original almost note for note, reformulated into an Extrait de Parfum concentration that deepens the original's presence on skin. The name tells you what the brand thinks of the reference: irreverent, a little crude, and proud of what it pulled off.
What makes the Joop! DNA worth revisiting is the heliotrope-tonka axis. Most aromatic fougères lean on lavender for their floral middle, but Joop! built around heliotrope, a powdery almond-cherry note that adds a gourmand sweetness underneath the herbal top. Caraway does the spicing work, giving the opening a warm, almost rye-bread character that sets it apart from the usual aromatic templates. Coriander bridges the two worlds, green enough to read aromatic, round enough to support the sweetness underneath. It's a structure that rewards wearing rather than sniffing from the bottle.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are loud. Grapefruit and rosemary hit the air with a bright, almost astringent energy, the kind of opening that announces a room. Caraway threads underneath, warm and slightly bitter, the smell of crushed seed between your fingers. Around the thirty-minute mark, the heliotrope starts to surface, and the whole composition shifts register. The sharpness softens. Tonka bean arrives alongside, adding a creamy vanillic warmth that rounds off the herbal edges. Coriander holds the green thread taut through the middle, lending the heart a cool, leafy quality that prevents the sweetness from tipping into syrup. By hour two, the top notes have mostly stepped back, and what lingers is the powdery-almond sweetness of heliotrope layered over tonka's low hum. The base is understated but stubborn. Musk and vetiver don't roar, they anchor.
Cultural impact
The Joop! Homme DNA carries a cultural weight that extends well beyond the fragrance community, anchored in late-80s and early-90s nightlife imagery. His Jumping Shit! exists in that lineage, offering a re-rendered take on a composition that defined a certain era of club culture. The Dua Brand's whole catalog plays in this space, familiar compositions re-rendered with an irreverent edge, aimed at wearers who'd rather spend on a concert than a bottle. It sits alongside other Inspired Expression entries that target the same nostalgia, all betting that the structure of a classic, done well and priced honestly, still beats chasing something new.
