The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cunning Defense arrived in 2024 from The Dua Brand, composed by Mahsam Raza as part of the house's Inspired Expression collection. The reference is French Defense by Mind Games, a fragrance built around the strategy of a calculated opening move. Dua's version keeps that chess-board energy but translates it into something softer, warmer, more floral than cerebral. The brief here was simple: capture the floral-amber architecture of the original without the weight. Cherry and violet leaf carry the cool, calculated opening, where the fruit lends a glossy sweetness while the violet leaf brings a green, slightly metallic coolness that pulls the whole accord forward.
What's interesting is the chamomile. It's not a standard fruity-floral player, and its presence here does real work. Chamomile adds a clean, almost medicinal herbal note that keeps the cherry from sliding into candy territory. It pulls the sweetness toward something more grown, more composed. The Madagascan geranium reinforces that, bringing a green, slightly minty sharpness that the rose absolute alone wouldn't deliver. And the mimosa, powdery and yellow, acts as a bridge between the floral heart and the woody base. This is a composition that knows exactly what each note is supposed to do.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes belong to cherry and violet leaf. The cherry is dark, almost black-fruit, not the bright maraschino type. Violet leaf cuts in with a green, stem-like snap that keeps things from going syrupy. Chamomile hums underneath, quiet but present, adding that herbal-clean thread. Then the florals arrive. Rose absolute and geranium take over around the 45-minute mark, and the fragrance shifts into something warmer, more textured. The mimosa shows up as a soft, powdery veil, almost cosmetic in feel. By hour two or three, the base is fully settled. Amber and blond woods blend into a warm, woody close that reads slightly creamy, almost suede-like. Cedarwood adds a dry backbone. On most skin, this holds for 4 to 6 hours before becoming a skin scent, and the next morning there's a ghost of amber and wood left on the collar or wrist.
Cultural impact
Cunning Defense sits within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, a series built around reinterpretations of existing compositions. Those coming in fresh tend to read it as a polished, cherry-led unisex floral with real woody backbone, a composition that opens with a bright interplay of fruit and green leaf before settling into a warmer, more resinous middle and base. The cherry gives the first impression a clean, almost edible sweetness, but it is quickly tempered by violet leaf, which keeps the accord from leaning juvenile.
