The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Coastside Colada launched in 2021 as part of The Dua Brand's Original Blend Collection, a line built around accessible compositions. The official description paints a scene most people already know by heart: laughter from the water, shade from the umbrella, the waitress circling for another round. It's not trying to bottle a coastline. It's bottling the feeling of one afternoon done right, the one where nobody's rushing toward the next thing. The composition itself stays true to that sensory snapshot, layering yuzu, pineapple, blackcurrant, and mint at the top before settling into rosemary, thyme, mojito accord, pink pepper, cypress, and birch at the heart, and finishing with violet leaf, papyrus, and white musk in the drydown.
What makes this composition work is the tension between cocktail sweetness and herbal seriousness. Pineapple and blackcurrant bring the tropical drink energy, but yuzu, mint, and neroli cut it with something sharper, more Mediterranean than Caribbean. The heart doubles down on that herbal direction with rosemary, thyme, and a mojito accord that leans more garden than bar. Pineapple, lime, mint, rum's ghost, but treated as aromatics rather than flavorings. That's the move. Most summer fragrances stop at the garnish. This one keeps going into the kitchen, where the herbs actually grow.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are a loud, bright overture. Yuzu hits first, sharp and electric, followed almost immediately by pineapple and blackcurrant, which is sweet but not syrupy, more like biting into cold fruit than drinking something blended. Mint and neroli cool the edges so the whole thing reads as a frozen drink, not a candy. The yuzu's citrus zest sits at the very top, almost tart, and the pineapple gives it a tropical roundness while the blackcurrant adds that darker, almost-cassis depth underneath. The mint keeps it all sharp, a clean coldness that keeps the fruit from spilling into juice territory, and the neroli weaves in a faint orange-flower softness that makes the whole opening feel aerated. Within the first hour, the green notes take over.
Cultural impact
Coastside Colada captures a specific mood through a note structure that goes beyond the obvious tropical-cocktail setup. By pairing the dark fruitiness of blackcurrant with yuzu, pineapple, and mint, then grounding everything in mate and neroli, the composition nods to a coastal sensibility without leaning on the easy coconut-sunset stereotype. The blackcurrant brings a ribena-like depth that grounds the brighter citrus, while mate lends a soft, almost-tea-like earthiness that keeps the whole thing from veering into fruit-punch territory.
