The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nata emerged from a 2025 collaboration between Superfumista and Maison Alchymiste, rooted in the brand's French identity and co-creation philosophy. Perfumer Benjamin Sachs set out to translate a specific Portuguese pastry memory into a wearable form, choosing a fragrance name that makes the inspiration unmistakable. The brief was to honor the custard tart's identity without simply replicating it, and Sachs approached this by selecting ingredients that echo the pastry's key characteristics: the caramelized sugar top, the egg-rich custard, and the buttery pastry shell. His experience with edible-style compositions made him a natural fit for a project that required balancing sweetness with structure.
Sachs structured the note pyramid to reflect how a pastel de nata actually smells: a caramelized, spiced top layer giving way to a rich, creamy interior, with the base serving as the shortcrust foundation. Cinnamon and Coffee serve the same role here that pastry spices and roasted aroma serve in the tart. The Vanilla and White Musk in the drydown represent the lingering sweetness that stays on the palate after eating. Every pairing was chosen to honor that specific reference point, not to imply food safety or suggest the wearer smells like a bakery.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with Mandarin Orange, Lemon, and Cinnamon, the citrus immediately lively before the spice adds warmth. Within thirty minutes, Coffee emerges as the heart's anchor, its roasted quality providing contrast to the bright start. Orange Blossom weaves in as a floral counterpoint, and the Pastel de nata note rises to the surface, delivering the buttery, custard-like richness that defines the mid-section. As the hours pass, Myrrh and Vanilla take over, the resinous depth of the former tempering the sweetness of the latter, while White Musk ensures the close remains soft and skin-hugging rather than projecting aggressively.
Cultural impact
Since its 2025 debut, Nata has become a talking point among gourmand enthusiasts for daringly marrying coffee, pastel de nata and opoponax. The Superfumista × Maison Alchymiste partnership showcases how digital personalization can produce a scent that feels both nostalgic and cutting‑edge, earning it a niche following that values both tech‑driven creation and classic pastry comfort.
