Why it exists.
The beginning
Red Flamingo was inspired by Alexander Calder's Flamingo sculpture, the red steel piece that has become one of Chicago's defining public artworks. Perfumer Arthur Marrast worked with Step Aboard on this 2023 release, part of a collection that has explored cities including Milan, London, and Chicago. The fragrance belongs to Step Aboard's Chicago lineup, which also includes Silver Cloud and Black & White, three different fragrances drawn from the same urban setting. Marrast set out to translate a bold red sculptural shape into scent, and what emerges is a composition that feels warm, spicy, and quietly structural, a fragrance that reads as architecture as much as it reads as perfume.
The composition leans on an unusual pairing. Taif rose anchors the heart, but it's the saffron-orris conversation in the base that gives Red Flamingo its unusual warmth. Orris root brings a powdery, almost metallic coolness, while saffron pushes back with leathery heat. That tension between cool root and warm spice runs through the entire composition, and it's what keeps the fragrance from settling into any single category. Black tea in the opening adds a tannic quality, the kind of dryness that makes the citrus snap rather than slide.
The evolution
The opening brings a burst of mandarin, cheerful and bright, with black tea underneath pulling it toward something more serious and grounded. The citrus fades but doesn't vanish; it just stops leading and settles into a supporting role. As the composition opens up, Taif rose arrives and rewrites the mood entirely. It's not a head-shop rose or a granny rose, it's something more architectural, more geometric in the way it holds its shape in the blend. It smells considered in a way that doesn't need to announce itself. The saffron surfaces next, and this is where the fragrance commits to its personality. It leans leathery, slightly metallic, the kind of warmth that registers as intent rather than comfort. Orris root weaves through the middle hours, powdery and cool, keeping the saffron from tipping into straight amber territory.

Red Flamingo sits within Step Aboard's Chicago collection, a grouping that treats American cities with the same eye the brand has trained on Milan and London. The Calder inspiration reads as a deliberate choice, and it situates the fragrance within a specific artistic and geographic context that gives it a sense of place.
