The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nashwa arrived in 2017 as part of Shay & Blue's Extrait of Perfume Collection. Perfumer Julie Massé built it around a specific tension: the warmth of coconut and cacao noir against the depth of dark oud. The brand wanted immediate attraction, something that hits on first impression, and enduring fascination, which is why they pushed to extrait concentration. Opening with bright citrus clarity from bergamot, the fragrance quickly reveals its creamy heart where coconut milk and dark cocoa blend into something rich and enveloping. The contrast between that initial sparkle and the subsequent warmth creates a dynamic experience that evolves on the skin.
The structure is deliberately unbalanced. Bergamot and neroli open bright and clean, almost masculine in their restraint, then hand off to a heart of coconut and cocoa that smells nothing like the top. That contrast is the point. The citrus-neroli top prevents the coconut-cocoa from reading as beachy or juvenile, pulling the composition firmly into grown-up territory. It's a clever move: the heart notes could easily tip into sunscreen or chocolate milk, but the opening keeps them grounded.
The evolution
The bergamot and neroli open clean, androgynous, daytime-appropriate. These top notes temper the fatty sweetness of the coconut-cocoa mid, keeping it from reading as juvenile or beachy. But the oud in the base is the tell. It deepens as everything else settles, turning the composition darker and more resinous. On skin, the opening lasts maybe thirty minutes before the coconut-cocoa heart takes over. The heart itself offers a lush, gourmand quality that feels indulgent without being cloying. As the fragrance develops, the oud emerges to anchor the composition, adding smoky, woody depth that transforms the initial brightness into something more complex. The base notes work in concert with the skin's chemistry, creating a intimate dry-down that lingers close to the body. That's the extrait doing exactly what it promises.
Cultural impact
Nashwa Extract of Parfum sits in a specific niche: the sweet-oriental lover who wants depth without heaviness. The coconut-cocoa combination reads as creamy and approachable; the oud base adds seriousness. Reviewers note the fragrance strikes a balance between indulgence and sophistication, making it versatile enough for evening wear while remaining accessible for daytime. The Extrait concentration provides substantial longevity, with wearers reporting several hours of presence on skin. Fans describe it as a fragrance that reveals itself gradually, rewarding those who get close enough to discover its layered complexity.
