The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fernway is a travelogue written in scent, a composition from Sentier launched in 2024. The brief leans global. Three destinations, three chapters, one bottle. Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera brings the opening, with sun-drenched cliffs, terraced vineyards, and colourful villages setting the scene. Marrakech supplies the heart, its spice souks and burning resins lending an Eastern warmth. Bali finishes the story, grounded in the tranquil forests that have long perfumed the island's spiritual traditions. The citrus and resin notes tie the three together, a bright thread running through the warm wood and spice. Each chapter carries its own atmosphere, yet they share a single aromatic language.
Most destination fragrances pick a place and commit. Fernway picks three and stitches them together with resin. Frankincense opens the scent, myrrh and amber fill the middle, benzoin softens the drydown. The citrus isn't decoration, it sets the altitude for everything that follows. Tonka bean does quiet lifting work in the heart, bridging the bright top and the heavier base. The architecture is warmer than the opening suggests, and the opening is brighter than the drydown implies. The tension is the point.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and immediate, almost like peeling fruit into sunlight. The citrus is sharp enough to notice from arm's length, clean enough to feel like a reset. Frankincense hums underneath, giving the opening a faintly smoky edge that keeps it from smelling like a cleaning product. Soon after, the scene shifts. Myrrh and amber move to the front, the citrus pulling back to a faint shimmer. Tonka bean rounds the edges, lending a soft sweetness that bridges the bright top and the warming base. The composition settles into its drydown, a phase where vanilla and benzoin take over, wrapped in a warm musk with woody notes keeping things grounded. The scent sits close to skin as it wears, still readable but no longer broadcasting. What lingers at the end of the day is a soft resin-amber-musk trace, warm and slightly sweet, still recognizable on a sweater the next morning.
Cultural impact
Fernway sits at the intersection of travel-as-fragrance storytelling and an emerging interest in alcohol-free perfume formats. The three-destination structure, Italian coast, Moroccan souk, Balinese forest, follows a familiar narrative approach, but the resin-forward composition keeps it from reading as a standard crowd-pleaser. Bergamot and orange open the scent with a clarity that grabs attention, while myrrh, amber, and benzoin carry the weight of the composition through to the drydown. It's the kind of fragrance that gets noticed on someone who doesn't seem like they're trying.
