The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2014, Rochas reached back forty-four years. Eau de Rochas had launched in 1970 as a refreshing citrus fragrance. Over the following decades, the house reinterpreted it repeatedly: Eau de Rochas Homme in 1993, Reflets d'Eau de Rochas in 2006, Eau Sensuelle in 2009, Eau de Rochas Fraiche in 2010. Partnering with French artist and illustrator Aurore de La Morinerie, the house wrapped the original composition in new packaging, cobalt-blue and watercolor illustrations on white, Mediterranean in theme. French actress Zoe Felix fronted the campaign. The composition itself remained loyal to the 1970 formula: bergamot, mandarin, and lemon opening; jasmine, narcissus, and lily of the valley at the heart; iris root, olibanum, and patchouli anchoring the base.
The orris root is the tell. In a fragrance built on citrus brightness and white floral delicacy, the iris root in the base adds a powdery, almost aristocratic finish that elevates the composition beyond its fresh opening. Narcissus in the heart brings a green, slightly narcotic depth that stops the florals from reading as purely decorative. The olibanum adds warmth that grounds the bright opening and gives the drydown something for the wearer to discover up close. Jasmine softly cushions the florals while lily of the valley keeps the overall effect dewy.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately: bergamot, lemon, mandarin, a citrus triad that reads like morning light on stone. It holds for the first hour, sharp and clean, before the florals begin their transition. Narcissus brings a green bitterness that cuts through any sweetness that might develop. Lily of the valley keeps things dewy. Jasmine softens the edges. By the third hour, the composition has shifted. The citrus recedes and the orris root takes over, bringing a powdery elegance that wasn't present at the opening. Patchouli keeps the base grounded. On fabric, this lasts longer. The drydown rewards leaning in. The next morning, a faint trace of orris and patchouli may linger on warm skin.
Cultural impact
Eau de Rochas launched in 1970 and quickly became a reference in the high-end fragrance landscape. The 2014 limited edition refreshed that legacy with contemporary illustration while preserving the original composition. It offers a fresh visual presentation of the house's classic citrus and white floral signature.
