The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Causse Méjean sits at 44°N 03°E, where the landscape shifts as you gain elevation and the air carries different qualities at different heights. Andy Tauer designed 44°N 03°E with that range in mind. The coordinates aren't decoration. They're the brief. Working with natural materials, lavender oil, juniper and pine resin, chestnut and vanilla, Tauer translated the aromatic complexity into something wearable. Not a landscape painting. A document.
What makes this composition distinctive isn't any single material but how they work together. Chestnut brings a roasted, faintly sweet character that grounds the herbal intensity of the lavender rather than competing with it. Sugar and vanilla extend that warmth into a base that reads as gourmand without smelling like dessert. Natural materials limit what you can do, but they also make everything you achieve feel earned. The blend achieves a balance that feels intentional and refined, each note contributing to a cohesive whole.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly, wild lavender, bright and slightly camphoraceous, the kind that cuts through rather than soothes. Thirty minutes in, the heart materializes: juniper and pine resin carrying a terpenic sharpness. The transition isn't dramatic. The lavender doesn't disappear; it deepens alongside the woody notes. By hour three, the drydown takes over. Chestnut's roasted warmth meets vanilla's creaminess and sugar's quiet sweetness. The sillage drops to intimate. It stays close, the kind of fragrance you discover on yourself hours later, still there, still soft. The progression feels considered, each stage building naturally on what came before.
Cultural impact
The coordinate naming system presents fragrance as a document of place rather than an artistic statement. This approach distinguishes the work from the maximalist niche emerging at the same time. By treating each scent as a precise mapping rather than pure creative expression, the house offers an alternative to conventional fragrance philosophy.
