The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dolce Riviera is Reminiscence's 2024 addition to its La Méditerranée collection. But Fabrice Pellegrin's composition takes a quieter route. He chose hawthorn, a muted, almost melancholic floral, and anchored it with sandalwood. The hawthorn blooms quietly in the heart, its delicate, slightly powdery petals releasing a subtle sweetness that feels both intimate and restrained. Sandalwood provides a creamy, smooth foundation that wraps around the hawthorn, lending a velvety softness that extends the fragrance's wear on the skin. The aldehydes keep things bright, adding a sparkling, luminous quality that lifts the composition and gives it an airy, effervescent quality reminiscent of light catching water.
The aldehyde-star anise pairing is unusual. Aldehydes give that metallic, sparkling lift, a crisp brightness that opens the composition and invites the wearer in. Star anise brings warmth, a slight Licorice depth that rounds the aldehydes' sharpness into something more approachable. Neither note dominates. The hawthorn in the heart is the quiet surprise, less common than rose or jasmine, it adds a dusty, dried-flower quality that pushes the composition away from the obvious floral path.
The evolution
The opening hits clean, aldehydes first, that immediate metallic brightness, then star anise settling in like warmth spreading through cool water. Ten minutes in, the sharpness softens. Hawthorn appears alongside sandalwood, and the composition shifts from sparkle to softness. The drydown is where it earns its name: patchouli adds earth, white musk adds powder, and the whole thing stays close to the skin for hours. On fabric, it breathes. The aldehydes fade but don't disappear, they become a memory of the opening, present in the weave the next morning.
Cultural impact
The aldehydic-anise structure is unusual for contemporary releases. This combination sets it apart from much of what fills perfume counters today, offering something that feels both timeless and distinct. The aldehydes provide an elegant opening that speaks to a certain sophistication, while the star anise adds unexpected complexity. The overall effect is a fragrance that manages to feel both refined and intriguing, appealing to those who appreciate craftsmanship over trend-chasing.
