The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Reminiscence opened its doors in Juan-les-Pins, establishing a space where scent and memory intertwined. Essence continues that sensibility, with Michele Saramito creating the fragrance in 2010. Star anise and vanilla, warm woods and powder, that's the olfactory equivalent of a photograph you've kept in a drawer for years. Faded at the edges. But still yours. The composition opens with a bright, almost cold sharpness before warming into something softer, more intimate. There's something familiar about it, like a half-remembered melody that surfaces without warning. The balance between the sharp anisic top and the creamy, powdery base creates a tension that resolves into quiet comfort.
What makes Essence interesting is its refusal to commit. The star anise opening is sharp, almost aggressive, an anisic punch that doesn't apologize for itself. Then the vanilla arrives and softens everything, wrapping the spice in something powdery and warm. The tension never fully resolves, it's always half-sharp, half-soft, which is exactly why it works. This is a fragrance for people who like their memories slightly out of focus.
The evolution
The opening announces itself without apology, star anise and bergamot, bright and sharp, almost cold. That coldness lingers, a brief shock of citrus and spice that makes you lean in. Then the jasmine and nutmeg arrive, tempering the sharpness with something gentler, warmer. The drydown is where Essence earns its name: vanilla and sandalwood settling close to the skin, patchouli and cedar adding depth without weight. The labdanum gives it a slightly resinous quality, like old wood and dried flowers. There's a transition that happens, a softening that makes you realize the opening was just an introduction. By the end, you've forgotten the cold opening entirely. You just remember the warmth.
Cultural impact
Essence by Reminiscence launched in 2010. Discontinued now, it has become something of a collectors' item, sought after by those who appreciate the brand's approach to scent. The fragrance opens with a striking anisic note, bright and almost cold, before revealing a warm vanilla and powdery heart. Star anise and bergamot lead the top, transitioning into jasmine and nutmeg that soften the sharpness. The drydown settles into warm woods, sandalwood and cedar with a hint of patchouli, creating something that lingers close to the skin.
