The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud Glacial arrived in 2019 from Reminiscence, a house whose work with oud already carries a certain reputation. The composition takes the heavy, resinous character of oud and sets it against something bracing: glacial mint, the kind that stings the tongue on first contact. That pairing alone could have gone wrong in a dozen ways, but here it lands with surprising clarity. The mint doesn't decorate the oud so much as challenge it, pulling the dense wood into cooler territory and giving the whole composition a freshness that feels almost alpine. The result reads like a postcard from a colder climate, a sharp intake of breath wrapped around something deeply rooted. There's a mineral quality to the drydown that keeps the composition from feeling like a simple fresh-oud hybrid.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between cooling aromatics and dense base materials. Mint shows up twice in the pyramid, once at the top and once in the heart, which means the freshness isn't a one-note trick. It persists, shifting slightly as the composition evolves but never fully retreating. Meanwhile, cypriol and oud ground the base in earthy, slightly smoky territory, creating a dialogue between crisp and rooted.
The evolution
The opening belongs to mint and almond, with saffron threading underneath like a distant hum. Cold, slightly sweet, almost edible, the kind of introduction that makes someone lean closer. Within the first half hour, the green aromatics take hold fully, and the almond sweetness begins to recede into a softer supporting role. The heart unfolds gradually, with lily of the valley and rose arriving alongside a dewy, green quality, while a second wave of mint keeps everything lifted and airy. Violet adds a soft, powdery shadow that bridges the florals and the base. As the hours pass, the base settles in properly. Cypriol brings its earthy, vetiver-adjacent depth, oud shows up without shouting, and patchouli grounds the whole thing in something warm and a little smoky. Musk smooths the edges.
Cultural impact
Oud Glacial takes two materials that rarely share the same sentence and puts them in conversation. The combination of mint and oud could feel forced, a gimmick built around contrast for its own sake, but here the pairing feels earned. The mint brightens the oud without diminishing it, and the oud gives the mint something to push against, keeping it from feeling thin or transient. The composition also draws on cypriol and patchouli in the base, materials that add earthy weight and a slightly smoky undertone, while lily of the valley, rose, and violet contribute a dewy floral facet through the heart.
