The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Musk Nouveau arrived in 2010 as a fragrance born from years of working with essential oils. The composition emerged from a process of trial and error, built through direct experience with raw materials rather than from a predetermined concept. What resulted was a scent defined by its materials, an expression of botanical perfumery that explored the potential of natural ingredients and their complex interactions. The work reflected a commitment to understanding how each element behaved, how they softened and sharpened one another, and what happened when they were combined in different proportions. This was perfumery as conversation with the materials themselves.
The beeswax note anchors the composition with a waxy, slightly animalic warmth that is neither sweet nor honey-like. Ethier paired this material with coffee, an unusual choice for an all-natural composition. Coffee behaves differently on skin than it does in a cup, taking on a more resinous, almost tar-like quality depending on the extraction method used. The combination creates a heart that evokes morning and something older at the same time: a workshop filled with warm tools, the smell of making, the particular warmth of spaces where work happens by hand.
The evolution
Angelica and Brazilian rosewood arrive first, green and slightly spicy, with black pepper providing texture without heat. The opening is quiet, a gentle introduction that sets up what follows. Then the coffee and beeswax emerge together, and the fragrance reveals its character more fully. For the next several hours, this is a skin scent in the truest sense: present to the wearer, fading and returning as skin temperature shifts throughout the day. Jasmine appears as the composition evolves, softening the coffee's bitterness into something more floral and rounded. The drydown belongs to oud and patchouli, resinous and deep, with oakmoss providing earthiness that grounds the entire composition. The fragrance offers quiet company for hours, a steady presence that develops and changes as time passes.
Cultural impact
Musk Nouveau arrived as a fragrance that stood apart from the sweet, sillage-forward fragrances popular during that era. It did not compete on projection or longevity in the conventional sense. Instead, it offered something different: a fragrance built around natural materials that created a distinctive sensory experience. The beeswax-coffee heart was an unusual combination for an all-natural composition, giving the scent a character that set it apart from much of what else was available.
