The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Prime 8 by PROUD arrived in 2025 as part of the brand's numbered Prime series, a collection released through Deraah Trading Company. Carole Calmettes composed it, and the structure reads like someone who knows exactly which chord to strike first. The choice of Timur pepper at the top, the pairing of Spanish lemon with juniper, the frankincense landing in the heart rather than the base. None of this is accidental. Calmettes built a scent that opens like cold morning air through an open window, then earns its warmth through skin contact and patience. The Timur offers a citrus-tinged brightness that catches you off guard, more aromatic than spicy, and the Spanish lemon gives it a clean acidity that cuts through without ever tipping into sour.
The composition is unusual for how it balances two opposing forces. Timur, a cousin of Sichuan pepper prized for its citrus-tinged numbness, sits beside Spanish lemon oil and juniper berry. That trio creates a sharp, almost mentholated opening that gives the fragrance its initial clarity. Then the middle shifts toward frankincense resinoid paired with French clary sage absolute. The combination produces a dry, resinous herbal quality that anchors the brightness of the opening in something more contemplative.
The evolution
The earliest phase belongs to the citrus and pepper. Spanish lemon gives it brightness without sweetness, more zest than juice, while juniper adds that gin-like botanical dryness. Timur does something stranger. It tingles, almost like a very mild effervescence on the skin. The scent reads cool and slightly bitter, the kind of crispness that wakes up the air around you. As the composition settles, the frankincense and clary sage arrive together. The sage gives it a slightly sweaty herbal quality, clean but lived-in, while the frankincense adds that resin note that makes the whole thing more serious than the opening suggested. Lily of the Valley flits through underneath, a faint sweetness that keeps it from getting too austere. The drydown takes over as the hours pass. Indonesian patchouli grounds everything with its earthy, slightly sweet density.
Cultural impact
Prime 8 by PROUD arrived in 2025 as part of a numbered Prime series released through Deraah Trading Company, placing it within an organized catalog of numbered releases. The composition's unusual pairing of Timur pepper with Spanish lemon oil and juniper berries stands out for how it stacks materials from very different olfactory families in the opening, a Timur next to a bright citrus next to a gin-like botanical. Carole Calmettes's approach balances a cold, almost mentholated opening against a resinous frankincense heart and a Saffiano leather base. The result is a scent that doesn't settle into any easy category.
