The beginning
Grey Mountain arrived in 2020 as part of Privezarah's debut catalogue. No heritage theater, no founder mythology, no decade-old archive to lean on. Each composition stands as a self-contained statement about what modern perfumery could sound like without the weight of legacy. Grey Mountain specifically reads as an exploration of contrast: the cool brightness of citrus against the warm density of a chypre base, the floral heart that breathes air into an otherwise grounded composition. The opening unfolds with bergamot and grapefruit, that bitter-sharp citrus register catching light before the florals even register.
What makes Grey Mountain interesting structurally is the tension between its white floral heart and its earthy, mossy base. Jasmine, orange blossom, rose, and ylang-ylang form the middle register, which would normally suggest a sweet or indolic trajectory. Instead, the composition pulls toward chypre territory with oakmoss and patchouli anchoring the base, sandalwood adding cream, and white musk softening the edges. The strawberry note in the heart contributes a fruit-sweet lift without tipping into gourmand territory, more of a translucent shimmer than a syrupy pour.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes belong to the citrus. Bergamot opens with its characteristic bitter brightness, grapefruit peels in sharper and more tart, and together they create a cold, clean rush that feels almost metallic. Within thirty minutes, the florals arrive, but they don't crowd in. Jasmine comes through first, slightly indolic and warm, followed by orange blossom adding a creamy soapiness. Rose stays restrained, more suggestion than declaration. Strawberry appears as a fleeting sweetness, gone almost before you register it. Ylang-ylang registers at the edges, adding a dense richness that keeps the heart from floating away. By the two-hour mark, the base asserts itself. Oakmoss and patchouli combine into that distinctive earthy-green hum, the kind of smell that recalls forest floor after rain. Cedar and sandalwood add woody warmth, white musk smooths everything into skin.
