Why it exists.
The beginning
Young Romantics was part of Poesie's Mary Shelley's Nightmare collection, released in 2019. Joelle Nealy composed it herself, framing the scent around the Romantics themselves, that loose circle of poets and dreamers whose interiors always ran a little wilder than their manners suggested. The mood here is lush, literary, and faintly gothic. Fig preserves instead of fresh fruit. A rose that leans dark rather than garden-variety bright. Resins that smolder instead of simply glowing. Nealy built the composition around that tension between sweetness and gravity, between the comfort of a warm kitchen and the charge of a candlelit room at the end of a long evening.
The interesting choice here is restraint. Fig and rose together can easily collapse into pastry-shop sweetness, so Nealy lets resin and spice do the structural work long before any vanilla arrives. Ambrette seed carries a lot of that weight, a plant-derived musk that adds skin-warmth and a soft, almost apricot-blush fuzziness without reading synthetic. It gives the composition that lived-in quality, as if the scent belongs on actual skin rather than floating somewhere abstract.
The evolution
It opens with the fig jam doing exactly what fig jam does, dense, dark, jammy, slightly sticky-sweet in a way that reads more like late-summer preserves than fresh fruit. The red rose arrives within the first ten minutes, but it's not the polite tea-rose version; it's a velvet, almost wine-stained rose, already leaning toward the resinous things sitting underneath it. The first half-hour is the loudest the composition gets, and it isn't actually loud at all. Just warm. The exotic-spice and resin notes start asserting themselves around the 30-45 minute mark, and the vanilla bean softens the edges without flattening them. By hour two, the whole thing has settled into a close-skin muskiness, that ambrette seed doing its quiet work, slightly fuzzy, slightly warm, faintly powdery in the way good musks are. The sillage is moderate; this is a fragrance that lives in the orbit of the wearer rather than the room. On a sweater the next morning, it's all ambrette and the ghost of resin, like the memory of a candle that burned down hours ago.
