The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oyster! belongs to Poesie's Fantastical Banquet Collection, a series inspired by Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. The collection takes its cue from the play's wit, wordplay, and the charged moments between characters who can't stop circling each other, much like the fragrance itself. Joelle Nealy designed Oyster! around a paradox: the name suggests something briny and cold, but the composition delivers warmth, intimacy, and an unexpected sweetness that sneaks up on you. It's a fragrance that doesn't do what you expect. It does what you want, once you've given it a chance.
What makes Oyster! unusual is the way it handles cucumber, a note that often reads as spa-fresh or sharply aquatic in other fragrances. Here, the cucumber is bitter, green, almost vegetal, cut through with lemon and anchored by grey musk that keeps everything grounded. The elemi resin adds a faint resinous warmth underneath, preventing the composition from veering into something too clinical. Angelica brings an herbal, slightly medicinal quality that ties the fresh and salty notes together. It's a careful balance, bright on top, intimate at the base, with nothing wasted on showiness.
The evolution
The opening hits fast: lemon zest and ocean brine collide, the cucumber note arriving within seconds to ground the citrus. Within five minutes, the lemon softens and the grey musk begins to assert itself, not animalic, but present, warm, the kind of musk that smells like skin, not like a fragrance. The heart phase (roughly 30 minutes to 2 hours) is where the composition settles. The cucumber becomes less sharp, more integrated, almost creamy against the musk. Angelica and elemi resin emerge as quiet undertones, adding depth without competing. By the third hour on most skin types, the drydown is all grey musk and faint brine, the ghost of the ocean, the memory of lemon, nothing loud. On some skin, it fades faster; on others, it lingers close for four hours. The next day, faint traces remain on fabric, a clean, slightly salty warmth that makes you reach for the bottle again.
Cultural impact
Oyster! has carved out a specific niche among indie fragrance collectors: the aquatic that refuses to be aggressive. Unlike mainstream marine fragrances that project and fill space, this one sits close, rewards proximity, and divides opinion in the best possible way. It's the kind of fragrance that sparks conversation precisely because it's not trying to please everyone.
