The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lady Murasaki wrote The Tale of Genji at Japan's Imperial Court, a work many consider a foundational example of Japanese literature, its 800 waka poems woven through the prose like hidden verses. According to legend, when the Empress requested a new tale, Murasaki traveled eastward to Ishayama-dera. There, the full August moon blazed over Lake Biwa and she was struck by the scene: water, light, a temple. She began writing that night. Full Moon (At the Temple) translates that moment into scent. The bowl of rice is the moon itself, round, warm, luminous. Yuzu zest, shiso leaf, and lakewater form the aromatic grammar of Japanese pilgrimage: bitter, herbal, mineral. Hinoki wood and green tea provide the temple's quiet presence, the weight of a story that has endured for centuries.
What makes this composition unusual is the rice itself. Rice is the heart of this blend, offering a starchy, slightly mineral foundation that everything else orbits around. Here it creates a warm, creamy base that lends a subtle savory edge, a comforting depth that feels both familiar and quietly exotic. The green tea isn’t the bitter kind; it’s soft, sweet, almost warm, a gentle breath that mingles with the rice without overpowering.
The evolution
The opening is yuzu zest and shiso, bright citrus with a green, slightly peppery bite that instantly lifts the senses. The rice arrives quickly, warm and starchy, tempering the sharpness and giving the blend a comforting backbone. As the scent evolves, green tea weaves through, soft, sweet, and never bitter, adding a gentle, almost airy quality that mingles with the citrus and herb. The composition clings close to skin, projecting softly, an intimate whisper rather than a shout. Over time the aquatic nuance emerges, a cool, mineral freshness reminiscent of lake air, without any synthetic edge. The rice note deepens as skin warmth coaxes it forward, growing richer and more comforting, while the green tea and yuzu retain their brightness in the background.
Cultural impact
Full Moon occupies a quiet corner of indie perfumery, where literary inspiration meets subtle beauty. The scent draws you in with gentle warmth, inviting you to discover its layered character. It offers comfort without excessive sweetness, and a hint of strangeness without any harsh edge. The blend pairs a soft rice base with bright yuzu, fresh shiso, and a hint of hinoki, creating a harmonious interplay that feels both calming and intriguing. Wearers
