The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sleepy Ghost arrived in 2019 as part of the Ghost Stories collection, a line built on the idea that hauntings don't have to be horror. Sometimes a ghost just wants you to rest. Poesie, founded by former publishing professional Joelle Nealy, has always framed fragrance as narrative. Each release names a woman writer, artist, or fictional heroine. Sleepy Ghost is the one who stayed up too late, drank too much tea, and finally, finally fell asleep with her nose still in a book.
What makes this work is the honesty of the materials. The lavender isn't decorative, it's the French variety, real and camphor-sharp in the opening before it softens. The marshmallow isn't an afterthought, it's the Poesie marshmallow accord, warm and close, the kind of sweet that doesn't compete. Together they do something few fragrances attempt: they smell like actually falling asleep, not like someone trying to smell pretty at bedtime.
The evolution
The opening hits with lavender's herbal brightness, sharp, clean, camphor-edged. Almost medicinal in the best way. Within minutes the marshmallow slides in, wrapping around the lavender like a soft argument that eventually wins. The heart is where this fragrance lives: sweet lavender, pillowy and close, with the herbal note still present but gentled. The drydown is marshmallow dominant, warm, quiet, close to the skin. It stays intimate throughout. On most skin types, expect 4-6 hours of that quiet warmth. The sillage is low by design. This is a scent for the pillow, not the room.
Cultural impact
Sleepy Ghost sits comfortably in the indie sleepwear scent category, fragrances designed for comfort, not performance. It's part of a broader movement toward intentional wearing: scents for specific moments rather than all-day projection. Unlike mainstream lavender fragrances that lean therapeutic, this one sweetens the deal with the Poesie marshmallow accord. For those who want their bedtime routine to smell like something, it's become a quiet staple.
