The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lady Disdain arrived in Poesie's catalogue in 2018, joining the Fantastical Banquet Collection. The release drew its name from Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, a play known for its verbal sparring and characters who guard their affections behind sharp wit. Lady Disdain takes its place among Poesie's Fantastical Banquet releases, a collection built around figures drawn from literature and folklore, each translated into scent. The composition itself tells the story: carnation as the lead voice, pink pepper for snap, Moroccan rose for sweetness held just out of reach, animalic musk for warmth, leather for grit, chocolate for depth, ylang-ylang for an almost tropical softness, labdanum and myrrh for resinous gravity, and vanilla for the faintest flicker of comfort underneath.
What's interesting here is the unconventional choice to anchor a feminine-coded composition on carnation. Carnation carries its own architectural weight: clove-like warmth, a slightly peppered edge, and a powdery depth that reads older and more deliberate than typical floral leads. The clove dimension is unmistakable from the first spray, lending the composition a near-spice-jar intensity before any other note has room to register.
The evolution
The opening arrives like a slap of carnation and pink pepper, vivid and almost medicinal in its clarity. That initial sharpness softens as Moroccan rose and ylang-ylang rise underneath, sweetening without smoothing away the edges. The heart phase is where the composition earns its title. Animalic musk surfaces alongside leather and chocolate, building a warmth that reads close to skin rather than performed. The leather here isn't harsh. It's worn-in, like the inside of a jacket that belongs to someone with opinions. The chocolate is dark, faintly bitter, weaving through the leather and musk to give the heart a gourmand edge without ever tipping into sweetness. As the hours pass, labdanum and myrrh take over the base.
Cultural impact
Wearers reach for Lady Disdain when they want presence without volume. The composition leans carnation-forward, with pink pepper, clove-like warmth, and Moroccan rose giving it a spicy-floral architecture that reads deliberate rather than decorative. It appeals to those who gravitate toward compositions with a backbone, where spice and leather do as much of the work as any floral element. Within Poesie's own catalogue, Lady Disdain holds a particular reputation for being one of the more unapologetic releases, a scent that prioritizes character over comfort.
