The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Commodity, founded in 2013 via Kickstarter, built its identity around gender-free, clean-vegan fragrances that strip scent down to its essential elements. The brief for Milk was deceptively simple: capture the feeling of a fresh glass of milk, that quiet comfort woven into daily life. Christelle Laprade answered in 2021 with a formula built around marshmallow as the primary vehicle for that creamy, reassuring quality.
The philosophy behind Milk treats sweetness not as a flaw but as a deliberate choice, grounded in the idea that comfort does not need to apologize for itself. The pairing of marshmallow with jasmine and rose creates a contrast between gourmand sweetness and floral softness that keeps the scent from feeling one-dimensional. Musk in the base anchors the sweetness, while woody notes ensure the fragrance leaves a trace rather than evaporating entirely.
The evolution
The opening moves from mandarin orange and red fruits, a cheerful nod to bubble gum that makes the intent clear from the first spray. Jasmine slides into the composition next, bringing a floral dimension that prevents the sweetness from becoming flat. The heart introduces rose and orchid, steering the fragrance toward something more elegant while white flowers keep the overall character soft and intimate. The drydown brings marshmallow back into focus, now fused with musk and caramel, and woody notes round out the progression with a gentle warmth that extends wear time.
Cultural impact
Milk arrived at a moment when the fragrance community was seeking softer, more inclusive scents that could bridge gendered expectations. Its vegan formulation and clean‑vegan ethos resonated with a growing audience prioritising ethical choices, while the roasted sesame opening introduced a novel gourmand twist that sparked conversations on social media about redefining comfort fragrance. Over the years, it has been cited in numerous editorial pieces as a benchmark for modern lactonic compositions, influencing newer releases that aim to balance sweetness with subtle earthiness, and reinforcing the brand’s reputation for innovative, accessible perfumery.
