The beginning
Collezione Privata Essenza di Aoud is the oud entry within Pal Zileri's Collezione Privata collection. The name says it plainly: essence of oud. Everything else in the bottle exists to frame that one material, with cashmere wood, frankincense, cedar, amber, and musk arranged as supporting structure rather than competition. The Collezione Privata releases sit alongside the brand's Sartoriale line, a separate collection of fragrances that addresses a different territory in the house's catalog. Essenza di Aoud occupies the rich, smoky end of what the Collezione Privata explores. It is a composition that takes agarwood seriously enough to build the entire architecture around it, treating oud as the central pillar and letting the other notes play supporting roles with careful moderation.
What makes this composition distinctive is how little it does. Where many oud-forward fragrances stack ten supporting notes to justify the agarwood, Essenza di Aoud uses just six: spice up top, cashmere wood and frankincense in the middle, cedarwood, oud, amber, and musk anchoring the base. The restraint is deliberate. The result is a scent that reads as oud without leaning on sweetness or density to carry the material. The cedar keeps it angular. The cashmere wood softens without flattening. The frankincense adds the smoke.
The evolution
The opening unfolds in slow increments. Spice hits first, not sharp but warming, like the first minute of a candle where the wick hasn't fully caught. Then the frankincense arrives, and the composition tilts toward the incense altar. This is the loudest phase. Anyone within arm's length will catch the resinous cloud, the moment when the fragrance announces its presence most directly and the sillage carries furthest from skin. As the composition moves past its opening, the oud proper surfaces. It's a clean, woody oud rather than a barnyard one, closer to polished wood than fermented fruit. The cashmere wood joins it, and the texture shifts from smoky to tactile, something you'd want to touch rather than just smell. Cedar sharpens the edges so the scent doesn't collapse into warmth.

Essenza di Aoud sits in an unusual position, bringing oud into a context where the material is treated with Western compositional discipline rather than the maximalist approach often associated with agarwood releases.
