The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Volume arrived in 2010, crafted by Marie Salamagne. The fragrance was created for young and energetic men ready for fun and challenges. Not a statement fragrance, not a quiet one. Something in between. Salamagne reached for citrus to grab attention at the first spray, then layered in warmth and spice to give it somewhere to go. The name itself is a quiet contradiction, Volume suggesting loud, the fragrance suggesting the opposite. That tension is the point. The opening delivers that immediate brightness, a tart citrus punch that cuts through, and then gradually the scent reveals its deeper layers, the warmth and spice emerging to create something more substantial beneath the initial pop.
What makes the pyramid interesting isn't any single note but the structural choice Salamagne made. The sweet-sour citrus opening and the warm balsamic drydown feel like they come from different fragrances, which gives the wearing experience a sense of movement. The rum and Peru balsam combination works to bridge the gap between the bright top and the warm base without either side winning outright. Rum brings an alcoholic sweetness that echoes the opening's energy, while Peru balsam adds depth and a slight leathery quality that anchors the composition.
The evolution
The opening hits fast: lime bright and tart, quince adding a honeyed fruitiness that softens the edge, bergamot lending a touch of sophistication. Cedar arrives early, injecting a green, coniferous note that cuts through the sweetness before it can become cloying. Then the citrus recedes. The heart takes over, cloves and nutmeg driving the warmth, plum giving juiciness, rum making itself known with that characteristic sweet-boozy quality. Peru balsam threads through, adding a resinous, slightly leathery depth. The spices continue to evolve, their initial intensity mellowing as the base notes begin to assert themselves. Sugar and patchouli come forward, creating a powdery, slightly earthy warmth that replaces the earlier brightness. Musk lingers in the background, cool and clean, providing a finish that remains close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Volume appeals to young men who want a fragrance with character but without niche pricing. The scent has found its audience through Oriflame's distribution model, reaching consumers directly. Reaction to the fragrance has been mixed in the way that many mass-market scents are: praised for its composition and noted for projection, a tradeoff that defines the fragrance's identity. Some wearers appreciate the intimacy while others wish for more presence, but the scent maintains a consistent character across different contexts.
