The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Empireo takes its name from the Empyrean, the highest, unmoving sphere beyond the nine heavens in Dante's Divine Comedy. It's the realm where divine love contemplation occurs, where Beatrice leads the poet in visions of pure, resplendent light. Luca Maffei built this fragrance as an olfactory translation of that elevated, contemplative space. Not the drama of paradise, but the quiet certainty of it. The transparency of clean air. The warmth of something that has always been there.
The structure here is unusual in how it balances freshness with warmth. The top opens with bergamot and lavender, bright, clean, almost medicinal, while myrrh and incense add an almost sacred depth. That combination (clean + resinous) creates the sensation of something purified. Then the heart softens everything. Heliotrope brings its almond-like powderiness, white rose adds quiet romance, and jasmine sambac introduces an exotic richness that prevents the florals from feeling delicate. The base amplifies rather than transforms: vanilla and tonka extend the sweetness, amber and benzoin add resinous warmth, while cedarwood and sandalwood keep the entire composition grounded.
The evolution
The opening announces bergamot's citrus brightness and lavender's clean herbs within minutes. Incense threads in early, adding a smoky, almost sacred dimension that contrasts with the freshness. Thirty minutes in, the florals take over, heliotrope's powderiness and jasmine sambac's exotic richness create a heart that feels romantic rather than delicate. The transition isn't dramatic; it's a gradual softening. By the second hour, vanilla and amber have arrived. The drydown settles close to skin, warm and creamy, with sandalwood providing a smooth, persistent base that extends for hours. On fabric, it lingers into the next day, a quiet, intimate presence rather than a room-filling statement.
Cultural impact
Empireo occupies a quiet corner of niche perfumery for those seeking something romantic without being mainstream. With around 60 ratings across platforms, it remains relatively undiscovered, a meritocracy of sorts. For wearers drawn to powdery florals with warm, close sillage, it offers an alternative to louder, more celebrated compositions. The Italian Renaissance spirit lives here, refined and intimate.
