The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Astronaut arrived in 2022 as part of Nicheend's Universe Collection, a suite of fragrances each named for a celestial body. Where other entries in the lineup might lean bold and extreme, Astronaut turns its attention inward. The focus is the person inside the suit, the warmth they carry with them rather than the void that surrounds them. The result is a woody-floral composition built around Bulgarian rose and Atlas cedar, a pairing that draws contrast between delicate florals and the steady presence of wood. Bulgarian rose introduces a lush, slightly dewy sweetness, while Atlas cedar grounds the blend with its dry, almost stony character. There's nothing shrill or overwhelming here; instead the fragrance holds itself with the quiet confidence of someone accustomed to solitude.
Bulgarian rose and geranium open the composition, but this isn't a soliflore. The geranium introduces a green, almost peppery facet that keeps the rose from tipping into sweetness, lending the top a crisp, lifted quality that feels almost cool against the warmth of the petals beneath. The heart then shifts entirely to wood, with Atlas cedar and guaiac wood forming the structural core. Atlas cedar brings a dry, clean woodiness, while guaiac wood contributes a smoky undertone that sits low in the blend.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes belong to the rose. Bulgarian rose opens dense and slightly honeyed, with the geranium threading through it like a green current. It smells like a florist's workspace at closing time, petals and stems both present. By the 30-minute mark the cedar begins to surface, and the geranium recedes. The scent crosses into drier territory, the rose losing its sweetness and gaining something more mineral, almost papery. Around the 2-hour mark the guaiac wood comes forward. The composition now reads as warm timber with a floral memory rather than a floral with woody support. The base reveals itself gradually between hours 3 and 6. Amber softens everything from underneath, while vetiver adds a dry, earthy close. By hour 6 the fragrance has settled into a quiet wood-floral hybrid, close to skin, still recognizable. The next morning on a scarf or collar, there's a faint trace of warm wood and faded rose. Nothing dramatic. Just evidence of someone who was there.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 release, Astronaut by Nicheend has maintained a steady presence in conversations about accessible niche perfumery, particularly among wearers drawn to compositions that balance florals with wood. The fragrance's Bulgarian rose and geranium pairing offers an alternative to the heavier, resinous profiles that often dominate independent perfumery, making it approachable for those newer to the brand. Within Nicheend's 2022 release, Astronaut stands out as a more wearable entry, a scent that doesn't demand attention but rewards close attention.
