Named for the fifth planet from our Sun, Jupiter anchors Nicheend's 2022 Universe Collection, a coordinated suite of ten fragrances, each one translating a celestial body into something wearable. The release marked one of the brand's most ambitious projects, sequencing a complete solar system in scent form. Within the lineup, Jupiter carries the weight of monumentality. It opens with a dense resinous accord where frankincense dominates the first fifteen minutes, its cool incense character hovering over a darker base of oud and amber. As the top notes soften, a quiet sweetness surfaces, threaded through benzoin rather than any overt gourmand element. Hints of spice sharpen the composition without ever crossing into aggressive territory.
What makes this composition distinctive is the structural decision to use frankincense twice, once at the top and once in the base, with cedarwood, patchouli, and vanilla between. Most oriental-sweet fragrances build from bright to dark. Jupiter does the opposite: it opens with the heavy, resinous material and closes with it again, as if the entire drydown is a return to the starting point. The orange note is the only real brightness in the pyramid, and it functions less as a citrus accent and more as the moment of light that flares before the cedar-patchouli gravity takes hold. Vanilla softens the landing without softening the weight.
The evolution
The first ten minutes feel almost ecclesiastical. Frankincense dominates, dry and resinous, and the orange reads more like candied peel than fresh juice. Then the cedarwood arrives, and the composition shifts from something you might smell in a church to something you'd find in a study, all wood polish and old books. Patchouli deepens the floor. By the two-hour mark, the scent has settled into its adult register: warm, slightly sweet, unmistakably oriental. The vanilla begins to surface around hour three, taking the sharp resinous edges and rounding them into something you could wear to dinner. The frankincense returns in the base and stays, threading through the drydown like a signature. Five to six hours on skin, and what's left is a close, sweet, resinous warmth, the kind of trail that follows someone into the next room.
